Our young talent Diana achieves a spectacular result against a GM

(ps) The “Thüringer Allgemeine” too thought this fine draw against a grandmaster worth an article. Diana Bückert actually managed to wrest a draw from the Erfurt chess grandmaster Thomas Pähtz in a blitz tournament. How this game came about and with which opening Diana put the father of Elisabeth Pähtz in difficulty, you can read here in the newspaper article (pdf).

The course has been set for a successful season for our formidable U12 team (boards 3 and 4 are far superior, on the top two we can hold our own against anyone) - the team qualifies convincingly for the semifinal on 18 September, which we will host, with only 2.5 dropped points (2 losses, one draw and 9 wins) out of 12 possible points! . - The U12 lichess team with five fearless players contested the last XP match of this season and, for want of a sixth player, still finished in an excellent 4th place. - the trainers’ meeting taking place at the same time was also very productive: application to the City of Munich’s call for tenders, drawing up a pedagogical-didactic concept, talks with schools about after-school care and chess clubs, funding applications for the holiday courses - the hybrid chess camps will therefore take place, club training and performance groups, in other words the four pillars of our youth work, were also discussed!

We achieved promotion to the 6th Quarantine League; Jan came late, but saw and conquered = 100% (congratulations, 2500 is not far off :). - the U18 team finished 1st at the Tegernheim cup tournament; after building a big lead, with a few exceptions, the bad habit of just watching took hold, so it got tense again at the end; Edwin put in the effort and clawed back the decisive points against the Miesbach players. - Registrations for the holiday courses are possible; throughout August there will be courses for beginners and advanced players (hybrid format)

Successful start to the over-the-board tournaments: Georg takes the U12 cup in Saal an der Donau, Emir improves his DWZ figure, and our teams gain their first experience (U16 in Dachau) and are real handfuls for the favourites (2 U14 teams in Kirchheim) at the weekend

(rh) At the weekend we took part in the U14 and U16 championships with three teams, thus offering many opportunities to play for our active members. The U16 had it hardest in Dachau, since with Bhav and Samy we had players who were playing their very first DWZ games. The first opponent was Aschheim. The games developed excitingly; especially on the last board a real firework display broke out, which Samy had to fend off with his last moves until the opponent ran out of ammunition and Samy had the chance to win outright. Unfortunately it turned out otherwise, but Samy showed fighting spirit and saved the game to a draw, an exchange down. Zhafaar had to face Fabian Müller, who remained unbeaten in the later course of the tournament. Zhafaar held up well; during the king’s attack he made some mistakes in defence, so that Fabian prevailed. Minh Hieu was not yet in form and even brought about the mate himself by opening the h-file. Bhav was finished fastest; he had reached a rook endgame a pawn down and was checkmated. In the second round we were represented against Vaterstetten with three players. No surprise came off here and we lost clearly. In the third round we managed two full points; Bhav and Samy won.

With Minh Hieu I drove to the U14 championship in Kirchheim after the first round. In the first round our teams had already faced each other. Maxim had played against JianQi and Johann against Elias. On paper Elias and JianQi should have won, but it turned out differently in both games, so that Schachfreunde München e.V. 2 pulled away with two match and board points. According to the pairing arithmetic, the bye always fell to the last team in the table. Fortunately, in the second round it was Haar. Schachfreunde München e.V. 2 had to face Tarrasch. On the first board Maxim played and held out for 60 moves against Aaron. On the second board the inexperienced Johann (he too is playing his first DWZ games) fell foul of the touch-move rule, which set up his only defeat on the day. Valentin had the better chances in the rook endgame, but at the critical moment he failed to capture the opponent’s central pawn and instead pushed his own pawn forward. A pity, so the consolation point was gone.

In the encounter Schachfreunde München e.V. 1 against Zugzwang, club members also met. Moritz beat Carl and Emir beat Elias. In the game between JianQi and Adrian Bock the immense space advantage that JianQi worked out step by step decided the game. The first board was unoccupied, this point also went to us.

Things continued with Schachfreunde München e.V. 2 against Aschheim and Schachfreunde München e.V. 1 against Haar; both teams won, the second 3 to 1 and the first 4 to nil. So the day had been successful.

On Sunday the second team sat out the first round. The first played against Tarrasch. On the first three boards our players were two years younger and demanded everything from their opponents. On the first board Vorni played against Siri Prinzen, on the second Moritz against Aaron, on the third JianQi against Pierre Lipinksy and on the fourth Elias against Ferdinand Lipinsky. In the wildest game on board 4, Elias prevailed and took the point. JianQi lost a pawn and fought his way into the endgame, where he then succumbed. Aaron increased the pressure against Moritz, but the latter held firm and even took the lead with a bishop. In the meantime I was already in Dachau and followed with surprise the message from Marcus that Moritz was winning. But soon the message came that the advantage was gone. In the rook endgame Aaron’s experience prevailed. Considering that Moritz was only playing his 6th DWZ game and was the younger of the two, we can only congratulate Moritz on his performance.

In the last round, after the defeat, the first team had a bye. Schachfreunde München e.V. 2 played against the favoured Garching players. Here, on board 4, the only surprise came off: Lucas prevailed against the more experienced Claudia Pyffczik. The match ended 3 to 1. Both our teams played well and finished 3rd and 4th behind Tarrasch and Garching.
