About the club

Who we are.

Schachfreunde München e.V. is Munich’s youngest chess club. Founded in 2018 as the neighbourhood club Schachfreunde Gern — with roots in the Moosach youth chess scene — we gained many new members from all over Germany during the chess boom of the coronavirus years. That prompted us to rename ourselves Schachfreunde München e.V. and to offer training both offline and online. We’ve had excellent experiences on both fronts.

We tell the whole story — from Moosach via Gern to today — on our history page.

What we do.

Besides the “regular” life of a chess club — with regular game nights for its members — we field several teams across different league levels, from the Regionalliga down to the lower divisions, and take part in tournaments in and around Munich. Several venues in Munich’s west are available for our games and training. A special focus of our club is youth training: for our youngest players we offer training sessions online and in person, and we make it possible for them to take part in national and international (online) tournaments.

What we want.

We’ve set ourselves the goal of promoting chess above all among children and young people. Several mostly volunteer and licensed chess coaches are available for this. Even though we already have members from other German cities, we’d love to win young Münchners over to chess. We’re deliberately not tied to particular districts — on the contrary, we want to promote chess across the whole city and the Munich region. Sadly the share of women among chess players is still rather low, which is why we’re especially glad whenever we can win girls and women over to the game.
