Rapid Chess Open in Deisenhofen
(rh) Once again everything was set up and the children and youngsters got to take part in a real rapid chess open. We participated in all age groups and were strongest in the U10. Including the passive members, we fielded 23 players in total, 10 of them in the U10. There were two golds, one silver and two bronzes.
But let’s start with the youngest. In the U8 we sent Atreyu and Nico into the race. It was almost a repeat of the Bavarian Individual Championship, with two of the three seeds also playing in Deisenhofen. Only Fynn Jeremy was missing. Atreyu once again finished 3rd as the youngest of the round and collected his well-deserved trophy. This time he gave up only 1.5 points and almost snatched the full point from the winner in a queen endgame with an extra rook. It ended in perpetual check, though. Nico scored 50% and took 10th place out of 20. Congratulations to both of them.
In the U10 our passive member Daniel Hepp also played. This time, as he had last autumn at the Moosach Open, he scored 100%. In the first game against Valentin we were quite surprised that he could keep up well against Daniel. It wasn’t until around the 20th move that the first clear inaccuracy appeared on the board and Daniel could take the first point. On board 2 Fabian made his likewise experienced opponent Veda work hard. Around the fifth move Veda had to take a lot of time and used about 7 minutes. The initial momentum fizzled out for Fabian, though; he lost his bishop and could no longer defend against his opponent’s counterattack. Despite the defeats, we were highly satisfied with these newcomers’ showing; they scored 3 out of 7 in total. Melissa, Smrthi and Konrad did the same. Martin scored 2.5 points. Lucas and Saksham, with four points each on their account, played an endgame in the final round, the winner of which would reach the podium. This time it was Saksham, who had already beaten Smrthi and Kai (6th with 4.5) and thus became club champion and 3rd in the final standings. Congratulations on that.
The U12 was considerably stronger. Tugrul surprisingly lost in the first round and the tournament was not to go optimally for him; in the third round he also suffered a narrow defeat against Laura Huber. Not much was missing for a drawn position here, but his time ran out before that. David kept up his winning streak in exciting games until the 4th round against Tim Geist. Here he gave up his only point, but he claimed all the others in inimitable fashion. The endgame in the final round against Noa was a tough one; around 15 people gathered around the board, watching the two of them play spellbound. In the end, two seconds decided between victory and defeat. Tugrul finished 7th. Vedarth scored 3 points and Tugce 4.
In the U14, Bhav provided the surprise; he scored 4 out of 7 and finished 10th, overtaking many players with a DWZ rating over 1100. He has now truly arrived in tournament chess! Sebastian finished 6th with 4.5 points. Arnav scored 3.5 and landed in 13th place.
In the U16, Niklas was the favourite; he had already won this age group in Moosach. This time he won the final against Edwin, scoring 6.5 out of 7. He didn’t lose a single game, drawing only once.
In the U18, Ardian played almost flawlessly up to the 8th round and scored 7 points with two draws. He was the only one able to beat the eventual winner Maximilian Ponomarev. In the final round against Stefans an equal position arose; in the case of a draw Ardian would have finished 2nd, so he had to play for a win and made the decisive mistake in the endgame. Nevertheless, we were highly satisfied with the performances of Ardian and Niklas. They make up 50% of our strong U20 team.
