Compact DWZ tournament with the DEM heroes Tugce and Tugrul and many others over the weekend, festival at the Jugendtreff AU on Thursday, and report on the Individual Championship in Willingen
Let’s start right away with the surprise. Tugrul gave us our first German title; although the free place for the U12 had been applied for, there could only be one from Bavaria, namely Konstantin Stichter, who confirmed the trust placed in him with the title in the U12! Tugrul had to fall back on the B tournament of the ODJM. Here he played with youth players with a DWZ between 1300 and 1700. He scored 7.5 out of 9 and won not only the title but also many DWZ points (and some Elo points) on top. Right afterwards, at the DWZ compact tournament over the weekend, he proved that the title was no coincidence. Here he won his group against experienced 1700-rated players with 2 out of 3 and was described by a fellow player as a “calculating monster” for his play in unfamiliar positions. Congratulations Tugrul. Keep it up!

His twin sister Tugce represented us as a direct qualifier in the U12w and, like Vroni in the U14w, scored 4 out of 9. David also climbed up through two wins, managing 5 points. Tugce, as winner of the U12 at the compact DWZ tournament, collected not only the trophy and medal but also her first cash prize. In the top group there was 120, in the groups between 1600 and 1900 there was 80, in the 1500-1600 group 60 euros, and in the groups below that 40 euros.
Among the youngest, we managed 10 rounds over two days; Amelie Werner and Varvara Mandzuk were there both days. Varvara started both days with unexpected defeats against Fabian and Marc. On the first day, after the defeat against the in-form Fabian, she was able to land four wins. On the second day, in the 5th and decisive game against Atreyu, she went in for the Berlin Defence with Sxd4 and the king on e6; Atreyu, however, was solid in his theory and didn’t let the initiative slip from his hands. So Atreyu was able to claim the group win ahead of Kai, who likewise stayed unbeaten but drew one more time. There were exciting matches on both days; the chess players in the first group were amazed at the youngest playing 10 DWZ-rated games over two days — they themselves managed only three.
In the amateur adults’ group, Jonas Keinholz triumphed with 4 out of 5.

The longest journey so far was taken on by our passive member Azat from Berlin. After two years of pandemic we were finally able to get to know each other. Leonas from Augsburg had also played in the U8 team. Whether it was due to the excitement or to the strong opponent — Vedarth was able to prevail against Azat. Xaver played against Tugce for the second time; this time, in his own words, things looked promising before he made a wrong move. Saksham surprisingly secured a draw for the first time against a player with a DWZ of around 1100. So right in the first round there were two surprises. Saksham unfortunately managed no further points; he lost his games. Tugce, on the other hand, gave up not a single point. Azat still lost to Tugce and won the remaining games. Xaver and Vedarth drew, so Vedarth landed in third place with 50% of the points, ahead of the level-scoring Xaver.
At the festival at the Jugendtreff Au the Thursday before, about 15 people came together; we played table tennis, got to know each other better, and chess was not neglected either. It was a pleasant afternoon.
