Tugrul Türel: Amateur Champion and now also FIDE Master (FM)
Sometimes everything you have worked towards for years comes together in a single week. For our junior player Tugrul Türel it was exactly that kind of moment: at the German Chess Summit in Dresden he won the German Amateur Championship – with a flawless record of 5 out of 5. Five games, five wins, not a single half point dropped.
Five rounds without a wobble
Playing a perfect tournament is a rare thing in chess. In most cases a single draw is enough to head home satisfied – but Tugrul wanted the full point in every round. Game after game he kept his nerve, played boldly and precisely, and gave his opponents no chance. In the end his tournament performance was well above FM level – and with it he crossed the decisive 2300 Elo threshold at which the World Chess Federation awards the lifelong FIDE Master (FM) title.
The first title holder from our own junior ranks
For our club this success is a special one: Tugrul is the first youth player from our own ranks to reach an international title of this magnitude. Anyone who has followed his path knows this triumph is no accident – he was already one of the key players when the club won the Bavarian U16 Team Championship. The title in Dresden is the natural continuation of a development that began in our club training.
As German Amateur Champion, Tugrul has also qualified for the upcoming candidates’ tournament – another big date we are already looking forward to.
